What is the chief end of man?
- Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.
Find a way to incorporate the importance of being God focused in everything you do today. Continuously ask yourself the question and really think about the answer. The old saying “what would Jesus do?” has been overplayed, but to really ask yourself the question of “how does this glorify my creator?” should be asked throughout the day. Forcing yourself to do this for a short time will get you in the habit to be more Christ-like all day long as second nature.
As a parent, find a way to bring an intentional focus to everything your child does. Ask your child, “is this glorifying God?” or “how is this glorifying God?” In something as simple as playing with a sibling, it makes them think about what they are doing and how it can be focused on our ultimate chief end of glorifying God in everything we do. Would be great if this helped them to play nicer with each other..
Growing up, my father would often ask “is this edifying television?” (usually to The Simpsons). Of course, if he had to ask, it wasn’t. So I would end up changing the channel. But we should be asking our kids these kinds of questions. Make them think about the intentionality of being God centered until it’s second nature to them as well. Form good habits early to build that firm foundation.
